Mark 6 Protective Rings

The Portable Door

The Mark 6 Protective Rings are gold safety devices that Dietrich Wurmtoter issues to new trainees Paul Carpenter and Sophie Pettingell at J.W. Wells & Co. They make the firm's otherwise invisible magical pollution tangible: employees are expected to wear the rings continuously, not because they eliminate danger, but because the alternative is facing it unprotected.

Appearance and Fit

During a safety briefing, Dietrich Wurmtoter produces two shining gold rings and tells the trainees to try them on. He describes them as one-size-fits-all. Paul reluctantly pushes one onto his finger; initially too small, it expands like rubber, and his skin tingles where the metal touches it. The ring's visible, physical adjustment presents magic not as an abstraction but as something that acts directly on the body.

Purpose and Limits

The rings are issued because the firm performs so much magic that it produces ambient and residual fallout throughout the year. Dietrich explains that employees would be of no use if they were transformed by exposure, and directs the trainees to keep the rings on at all times. He reassures them that the devices are fairly harmless, while making clear that they do not protect against everything.

Their protection is deliberately qualified: Dietrich compares them to an Anderson shelter, a substantial improvement over having no protection at all, but no guarantee of safety. The comparison gives the rings both practical value and an ominous limit. They are safeguards for a workplace where magical hazards are routine, not a promise that those hazards have been mastered.

Place in the Safety Briefing

The rings appear as Item Three in Dietrich's instructions to the new trainees, following warnings about leaving the building by five-thirty and avoiding the third-floor lavatory. That sequence places magical fallout alongside ordinary workplace rules, while making the rings the briefing's first explicit protective equipment. Dietrich also notes that these are Mark 6 rings and that he has only the Mark 5 version himself, suggesting a numbered progression without explaining what changed between the models.
